Theatr Cymru is delighted to share the cast and creative team for Huw Fyw, a new play by Tudur Owen. With support from Galeri Caernarfon, this special production opens in Galeri on 1 May, before touring to main stages across Wales.
In his first stage play, Tudur will star as Huw Fyw, directed by Theatr Cymru’s Artistic Director, Steffan Donnelly. The company is also thrilled to welcome Owen Alun (Rownd a Rownd, Pijin), Dafydd Emyr (Kill Thy Neighbour, Rhinoseros) and Lois Meleri Jones (Dal y Mellt, Pobol y Cwm) to the cast. Alongside these talented actors, Theatr Cymru has gathered an excellent creative team to stage the production. Elin Steele will Design the set and costumes, bringing Huw’s world to the stage, with Elanor Higgins as lighting designer and Alexander Comana as sound designer.
80 years since the Second World War ended, Huw Fyw follows a grumpy veteran solider who experiences an unexpected stroke of luck which changes his life and pushes him to face his past. Taking the audience on an unforgettable adventure from a small village to Central London, the show features Tudur’s usual wit and mischief – but also challenges stereotypes of old people within society, and explores Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and survivor’s guilt.
Eager to venture into theatre, Tudur has been developing the script with Theatr Cymru over the last few years:
“I’ve been living with Huw Fyw for several years by now. He’s a character I created for one of my shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival but after a very exciting period of developing the play with Theatr Cymru, I can’t wait to present it on some of Wales’s biggest stages.”
Director Steffan Donnelly is looking forward to getting started with rehearsals:
“Since my first meeting with Tudur, I’ve loved developing this play. The first play by one of Wales' most renowned comedians is an exciting theatrical event and I can't wait for an audience to experience it. Tudur brings his mischief, intelligence and empathy to every scene. A debate between the past and present runs through the story, asking how do we reconcile ourselves with events that shape who we are? I'm looking forward to working ith this hugely talented creative team and cast to bring the humorous and charming world of Huw Fyw to life!
Accessibility is a key part of the Huw Fyw tour. Bilingual closed captions will be available at every performance, via the Sibrwd app, and bilingual open captions will be available at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff, and Pontio, Bangor. Welsh-language audio description will be available at every performance in Galeri, Caernarfon, Sherman Theatre, Cardiff, and Pontio, Bangor – and touch tours will be available before these performances too, offering an opportunity for blind and visually impaired audience members to explore the set, props and costumes.
As part of the partnership between Theatr Cymru and The National Centre for Learning Welsh, Huw Fyw will be the subject of a national contemporary lesson for Intermediate, Higher, Proficiency level learners and members of the Siarad scheme. The company is also developing a show programme exclusively for Welsh learners and Tudur will take part in an online talk for learners on 2 April 2025.
Huw Fyw is part of an epic year for Theatr Cymru, with the company staging 6 productions. The year’s opening play, Byth Bythoedd Amen by Mared Jarman, received rave reviews (★★★★ "Searing drama with the edge of stand-up comedy" The Guardian) and sold out theatres across Wales. Following Huw Fyw, Theatr Cymru will be back on tour with Brên. Calon. Fi by Bethan Marlow, before staging an assortment of new writing with Wrecslam! alongside Theatr Clwyd at the 2025 Wrexham National Eisteddfod. In the autumn, the company will present a bilingual production of Shakespeare’s Romeo a Juliet, before ending the year with a family show with the Sherman Theatre, Biwti a Brogs by Gwawr Loader.
