It might not be something that you’ll always think about, or even consciously notice, but art is central to our everyday quality of life and the wellbeing of our nation. A dynamic, prosperous, creative Wales is vital for all our futures. The arts make Wales a better place.

We want to work with you to improve the wellbeing and life of our nation through the arts. By investing in the arts you can achieve all seven goals of the Well-being of Future Generations Act. Together we can make a positive difference to the future generations of Wales.

As a partner in the delivery of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 we take this responsibility seriously and have already had productive contact with many Public Service Boards across Wales.

Our progress so far

From the day-to-day management and running of our offices to policy development and our entire corporate infrastructure, planning, training and financial strategies, we are committed to placing the sustainable development principle at the heart of what we do.

The monitoring of the Arts Council of Wales’ responsibilities is something that Council has taken very seriously. It has set the bar high and is very keen - not only to meet our obligations fully - but to champion the principles underpinning the legislation. We believe that they are important in creating a fairer, more compassionate and creative world. The day to day responsibility for ensuring that we are making progress with this work has been delegated to a Future Generations Committee.

The Art of the Possible programme

The Arts Council of Wales has been working in partnership with the office of the Future Generations Commissioner to develop a resource that can be used by public bodies, and similar bodies across Wales, to support them in meeting their obligations under the culture and Welsh-language goal of the Well-Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act.

This programme of work, called the ‘Art of the Possible’, has enabled us to highlight the work that is already happening in communities across Wales to improve well-being through culture and language. It has also challenged us to be more imaginative about the Wales we want and the steps we might take to achieve this vision.

The ‘Art of the Possible’ programme created 8 different ‘journeys’: each linked to a specific well-being goal. Each journey contains several topics. Each topic is an action that public bodies and other organisations can take to fulfill the ambitions of the Future Generations (Wales) Act.
