Actress, director, presenter and author Ffion Dafis has been appointed Artistic Director of Theatr Bara Caws.
Working as a freelance contributor in the arts world in Wales for over 25 years, she is currently scripting her new drama series for S4C as well as presenting Radio Cymru's arts programme.
Ffion will take over from Betsan Llwyd, who has been in post since 2012.
Theatr Bara Caws is a co-operative company, based in Caernarfon. They pride themselves on their community roots, with their theatre shows touring all over Wales.
According to Mared Llywelyn, who chaired the interview panel and is also Vice-Chair of the Bara Caws Board, "The appointment of Ffion Dafis is an exciting step for the company, as we are on the eve of celebrating our 50th birthday and the development of the new home.
"Ffion shared an imaginative and bold vision – promising that Bara Caws will continue as the 'Baby who came into the world bowling and noisy'. In her words, 'It's important that the noise continues.'"
Ffion Dafis said, "I never thought when I sneaked into the back of the hall in Penrhosgarnedd to watch 'Swmba' when I was a curious girl far too young that I would have the privilege of leading this rebel of a theatre to a new chapter in its history.
"As society changes, we must lead the narrative and reflect the diverse Wales we live in. I'm willing to be brave and try to attract audiences who think theatre isn't necessarily for them. I also want to ignite the imagination of the audience who think the world of theatre - theatre that is part of our texture here in Wales."
Mari Emlyn, a member of the Bara Caws Management Team, added, "As part of her presentation in her interview on Wednesday, Ffion asked ‘Do we fit like a glove?" to which the answer is certainly "yes!". As a co-operative that's all that matters, we're extremely excited as a team and really look forward to working closely with her to realise her vision for the future."
"Ffion will take over from the skilled hands of Betsan Llwyd and will start in the post in January 2026 – just in time for the Bara Caws celebrations at 50."
