Based at the University of Southampton, the Centre for Music Education and Social Justice brings together academics and non-academics to connect music research with real-world issues, driving meaningful change in musical communities across the UK.
Also home to the ‘AHRC Hub for Public Engagement with Music Research’, the Centre fosters collaboration between researchers, social justice advocates, and underrepresented groups—such as working-class, ethnic minorities, disabled musicians, and those with mental health challenges.
The new AHRC Hub for Public Engagement with Music Research is a first-of-its-kind project to address inequalities in music, and improve links between music research and the public, and over two years, will provide a range of training and networking opportunities, including funding for four ‘spoke’ projects that focus on the following themes of health and wellbeing, civic and cohesive communities, creative education and technological innovation.
The Hub is committed to being a truly national platform, and will embark on a mini tour in November and December, visiting Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The aim is to introduce the funding scheme and bring together potential collaborators.
For organisations in Wales, a participatory event will be held at BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff Bay (Part of Wales Millennium Centre) on Monday 18 November, featuring engaging activities designed to spark conversations between academics and non-academic partners. This session is open to academics, music organisations, charities, and freelancers interested in applying for project funding (£75k–100k per project).
