Deborah Light is a leading Welsh dancer and Choreographer. After over a decade of prioritising her young family and focusing on collaborative work and performing she is now returning to her independent choreographic practice. As an older, female artist Deborah’s choreographic voice is an important one: an anti patriarchal perspective runs through her bold and intimate work. In 2023 Deborah has been laying the ground for ambitious and rigorous new female led work that prioritises audience experience.
A substantial round of Research & Development in 2023 and a business development grant in 2023/24, both supported by Arts Council Wales, have helped Deborah to reinvigorate her practice, explore rich collaborations with production teams, access consultants and dance artists and to develop flourishing partnerships with arts and non-arts organisations across Wales and beyond.
“I am excited to be re-developing my independent practice and to now have 3 works that could be taken into development. My voice as an older female creative feels necessary in a sector where the workforce is predominantly young/female yet high profile choreographers are still predominantly male. I am passionate about supporting and strengthening the dance landscape in Wales through my work, it is vital to be creating opportunities for artists within the sector and to be supporting venues to engage with their publics and build audiences for dance.
