Chapter, Oriel y Bont, University South Wales and YMa warmly invite you to the world premiere of A Place in the World, a new film that explores the work of artist Garth Evans and the creation, disappearance and return of ‘Untitled Sculpture’, a public art project for South Wales.
In 1972, through a nationwide public art programme, Evans made a large, steel sculpture for Cardiff. He chose the city as the location for his work as he had strong family connections and his Welsh grandfather’s tales of his time as a miner were hugely influential in the sculpture’s form – evoking both a hammer-like tool and the image of a mine tunnel that was as black as coal.
The sculpture was installed in The Hayes, and the day after, Evans went out on the street, incognito, and stood by the sculpture to record the reactions of passers-by.
After the project, the sculpture was relocated to Leicestershire where it remained hidden and neglected for almost fifty years.
Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, in 2019 the generous donations of the public enabled the specialist restoration of the sculpture and temporary relocation back to its original site in Cardiff. Evans again recorded the responses of the community.
In 2020, the artist permanently gifted the sculpture to the University of South Wales.
In this world premiere, YMa plays host to a screening of A Place in the World, a film full of humour and unflinching honesty, that tracks the creation, installation, removal, loss and – decades later – reinstallation of the artwork, and its relationship with the public.
