Sherman Theatre’s two youth and non-professional ensembles, Sherman Youth Theatre and Sherman Players, will each stage a brand new production this summer.

Sherman Players, the company’s non-professional theatre group for those aged 18+, will perform in a new production of Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker based, on the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally. This dark yet funny play set in 1780s colonial Australia explores powerful themes around luck, class, power, crime, punishment and redemption. It will be performed 11-13 July 2024 in the Sherman Studio.

There are few things to look forward to when transported to barren Australia, as a convicted felon. Amidst brutality and the squalid conditions of a newly founded penal colony, stories of empathy and redemption emerge.

This is an exciting opportunity to enjoy a modern classic passionately performed by Sherman Players and directed by Sherman Theatre’s Creative Engagement Manager, Francesca Pickard.

Sherman Youth Theatre, the company’s weekly youth theatre programme for ages 8-18, will perform a new play written by Sherman’s literary team and the young people themselves, this summer. Have Your Welsh Cake… and Eat It by Davina Moss and Lowri Morgan is a satirical look at corporate greed, what happens to communities when decisions are made by the few at the expense of the many and the power of protest. It will be directed by Beca Llwyd, and members of the youth theatre will provide additional costume and lighting design. It will be performed 25-27 July 2024 by a cast of 65 in the intimacy of the Sherman Studio.

A billionaire bigwig with a penchant for golf courses is closing the Welsh cake factory. Join the outraged Peaceful Protesters and Risk-Taking Radicals as they take on the power-hungry people in suits ripping the heart out of their town.

Grown-ups will laugh at the satire and children will be inspired by the story in this new production offering controlled chaos delivered with energy and joy.

Both shows will be designed by Millie Lamkin, with lighting design by Rachel Mortimer.

Announcing the two shows, Francesca Pickard said: “These two new productions are great examples of Sherman Theatre’s commitment to inspiring and connecting non-professionals and motivating engaged young citizens to have a positive impact on the world.

“Both shows have been made by our incredibly committed and talented groups, who have enriched the process with their energy and ideas over many months. Through taking part, they learn about all aspects of theatre making, develop skills, build confidence and most importantly, have fun.”

Tickets for both productions are now on sale.
