Next week is the final week in The Shape of Things to Come, Volcano’s season of new short performances created by independent artists from Wales and beyond.
We end on a double bill of contrasting works, both performed four times from Thursday 13 – Sat 15 June. In SANC, Akeim Toussaint Buck, together with guest artist Yamina Lyara, is creating a piece about sanctuary, sanctity, and renewal – a responsive dialogue combining dance, voice, text and music. Meanwhile, in NYTHU, Elin Phillips takes us on a delirious and absurd journey into the disorienting world of new motherhood – with sudocrem, disco dancing and unsolicited advice.
The Saturday 2pm performance of NYTHU is a relaxed performance, ideal for parents with young children, or anyone who prefers a more relaxed theatre experience.
Akeim is an interdisciplinary performer and maker, born in Jamaica and raised in England. Graduating from The Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2014, Akeim began creating his own work in 2015. His intention is to create moving, thought provoking, accessible and free-spirited projects. Exploring a variety of themes to challenge, enlighten and entertain audiences in a visceral way, calling on multiple art forms to weave a spectacle. Audiences are invited to not just observe, they are implicit in the experience. The work aims to reflect on reality, looking at ongoing socio-political issues, with a humanitarian intention.
Elin is an actor who has recently started writing and producing her own work. She is a founding member of the theatre company Criw Brwd.
She has recently worked with Newport Riverfront, Sherman Theatre, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, The Other Room and Raucous Theatre Company. Her many other credits include work with West Yorkshire Playhouse, Theatr Clwyd, National Theatre Wales, Dirty Protest and Volcano.
On screen Elin played lead character Rhian in two series of the Tony Jordan drama Crash. Other TV credits include Will, Doctors, S4C dramas Zanzibar, Gwaith/Cartref and Y Syrcas along with sitcom Îha Sheelagh. Elin also plays Debra in the comedy film Love Type D.
