Job Title: Relief Visitor Experience Assistant (Bank Staff)
Location: Oriel Davies Gallery, Newtown, Powys
Salary: £12.60 per hour
Contract Type: Casual / Zero-hours
Reports to: Visitor Experience Manager / Director
Hours: As required – covering weekends, evenings, holidays, and staff sickness

Oriel Davies Gallery is a vibrant contemporary art space in Mid Wales, committed to sustainability, inclusivity, and community engagement. The Relief Visitor Experience Assistant plays a key role in supporting the gallery’s mission by ensuring a welcoming, professional, and safe environment for all visitors. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about art, hospitality, and community service, and who thrive in dynamic, public-facing settings.
Key Responsibilities:
Visitor Engagement & Customer Service
- Welcome and assist visitors, providing information about exhibitions, events, and the gallery’s mission.
- Ensure a friendly, inclusive, and professional front-of-house experience.
- Handle queries and complaints with empathy and efficiency.
- Support ticketing, donations, and retail transactions.
Café & Barista Support (if applicable)
- Prepare and serve hot and cold drinks to barista standards.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in café areas.
- Assist with stock management and food safety procedures.
- Support café events and community meals when required.
Operational Support
- Assist with opening and closing procedures.
- Monitor visitor numbers and collect feedback.
- Support event setup and takedown.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation across public areas.
Health & Safety
- Follow gallery policies including safeguarding, food hygiene, and emergency procedures.
- Act as a responsible team member during evacuations or incidents.
Person Specification
Essential
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work flexibly, including weekends and evenings.
- Basic administrative and IT skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Willingness to learn and adapt quickly.
- Welsh language skills or commitment to learn (weekly lessons available).
Desirable
- Barista or café experience.
- Experience in a gallery, museum, or visitor attraction.
