Cardiff, 1st of November 2023 — We are excited to announce the launch of ‘Kumbukumbu’, a pioneering project dedicated to showcasing and celebrating African-Welsh heritage, with a special focus on Black history in Wales, both past and present. This transformative initiative will be officially unveiled in a memorable evening event that will feature inspirational speeches, insights into the project, delicious food, and an exclusive private tour of a captivating exhibit.
Event Details:
Date: 1st of November 2023
Time: 18:30
Location: Grand Hall of the National Museum Wales, Cardiff.
‘Kumbukumbu’, which means ‘memories’ in Swahili, aims to create a comprehensive and interactive platform for the exploration and celebration of the rich history and contributions of the African community in Wales. This long-term project will provide a deeper understanding of the cultural tapestry of Wales and foster a sense of unity, inclusivity, and shared heritage.
By building an immersive website that will integrate all the findings and research over the next three years, the project will become a great educational and learning resource for both students and teachers. Together with the help of the community, ‘Kumbukumbu’ will create a place where this rich history can be gathered, researched, and preserved for future generations.
Highlights of the Evening:
- Keynote Speeches: Attendees will have the privilege of hearing from important community figures, historians, artists, and local dignitaries who have played a pivotal role in the preservation and promotion of African-Welsh heritage. Their speeches will inspire and educate, setting the tone for the project's exploration.
- Project Announcement: The main event of the evening will be the official announcement of ‘Kumbukumbu’. Attendees will be among the first to learn about the project's goals, activities, and how they can actively participate.
- Culinary Delights: Guests will be treated to a curated menu of delectable African and Welsh dishes, offering a fusion of flavors that reflects the unique cultural blend that ‘Kumbukumbu’ celebrates.
