On Friday 3 December 2021, Disability Arts Cymru will host an event to launch 'Bring Us Our Creative Rights: Disabled People’s Cultural And International Manifesto.' The manifesto explores Articles 30 and 32 of the United Nations Convention for the Rights of Disabled People (UNCRPD).
The UNCRPD 'reaffirms that all persons with all types of disabilities must enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms' and 'clarifies and qualifies how all categories of rights apply to persons with disabilities and identifies areas where adaptations have to be made for persons with disabilities to effectively exercise their rights and areas where their rights have been violated, and where protection of rights must be reinforced' - un.org. Articles 30 and 32 focus on participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport, and international cooperation respectively.
The manifesto comes after a series of focus groups and a survey that asked disabled/deaf people about their experiences and feelings around accessing culture and international collaboration in Wales. It also follows a manifesto from Disability Wales titled 'Bring Us Our Rights: Disabled People's Manifesto', published on 3 December 2020, highlighting key areas for advancing equality for disabled people as well as offering policy solutions.
During the event on Friday 3 December 2021, the hearing-impaired environmental sound artist Cheryl Beer, and disabled artist, actor, director, and writer Chris Tally Evans will share their creative reflections to the articles, commissioned by Disability Arts Cymru.
The research, manifesto, and event are supported by Disability Wales, Arts Council of Wales and Wales Arts International.
Cheryl Beer's commissioned piece will also be part of Wales Arts International's #PethauBychain campaign on 3 December. #PethauBychain (small things) is the campaign to amplify the wellbeing messages of the cultural sector on a global stage. It asks us to do the small things that can make a difference in our communities across Wales, to our planet, and our own wellbeing and for future generations.
