1. The Brief

As part of the ground-breaking Creative learning through the arts programme, Arts Council of Wales in partnership with Welsh Government are delighted to announce a new, exciting opportunity for schools.

Cynefin: Black, Asian and minority ethnic Wales draws upon the strengths of the Lead Creative Schools Scheme that has helped schools explore new ideas and approaches to teaching and learning over the last 5 years.

At the heart of the scheme is co-construction, co-delivery, pupil voice and pupil decision making. It is an enquiry-based approach that uses arts interventions and creative pedagogy to explore themes, issues and challenges across all areas of learning.

Our proposal is to establish a network of up to 25 schools, drawn from across all four Consortia regions, that will be supported to develop innovative approaches to devising and delivering creative collaborative projects that explore the following key themes:

  • Explore the history and development of Wales as a multicultural society
  • Explore the diverse experiences and contributions of Black, Asian and minority ethnic peoples in Wales, past and present
  • Work alongside Creative Practitioners in a learning environment to enhance the quality of teaching and learning
  • Support schools in preparation for Curriculum for Wales 2022

Our proposal will bring artists and creative practitioners into schools with the lived experience that will ensure ‘authentic learning opportunities that connect aspects of the curriculum and make connections to everyday’.

The learning and experience that comes out of this network of schools will provide exemplars of learning and experience that will be further developed and shared with schools across Wales.

We are looking to work with a video production company to capture the following elements:

  • the learning journeys of selected schools
  • the development of Creative Practitioners and teachers
  • a series of networking and evaluation conversations
  • pupil voice

We anticipate working collaboratively with the successful company to deliver:

  • A 15-minute film fully compliant with all accessibility requirements
  • A short synopsis of the full film to be used on social media platforms

  1. Background

Creative learning through the arts – an action plan for Wales was published in March 2015 and is jointly funded by Welsh Government and Arts Council of Wales. The programme has three overarching aims:

  • To improve attainment through creativity
  • To support teachers and arts practitioners in developing their skills

The Lead Creative Schools Scheme aims to promote new ways of working in schools, learning through the arts to provide opportunities to develop an innovative and bespoke programme of learning designed to transform the quality of teaching and learning.
